Videogame addiction NOT a mental disorder confirm experts

I should have posted on this yesterday, but just in case you missed it, experts at an annual meeting of the American Medical Association have opposed a suggestion that videogame addiction should be catagorised alongside alcoholism and similar disorders.

Dr. Stuart Gitlow of the American Society of Addiction Medicine and Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York, had this to say on the proposal:-

"There is nothing here to suggest that this is a complex physiological disease state akin to alcoholism or other substance abuse disorders, and it doesn't get to have the word addiction attached to it"

Notice the language here - 'doesn't get to' - it sounds as though the ruling would provide some sort of validation. Lord help us, it's another academic attempting to put the boot in to the videogame industry. Now it seems, games aren't even important enough to qualify as addictive agents.

To be honest, I very much doubt that games are capable of wreaking the sort of psychological or indeed physical damage familiar to addicts of drinks, drugs or gambling. There have doubtless been lost jobs, failed relationships, sudden acts of frustrated violence and, more disturbingly, a handful or reported deaths from extended MMORPG sessions, but nothing to pin a major mental disorder on.

Just in case, though, the psychiatrist group is monitoring the situations and, according to Reuters, has said if the science warrants, it could be considered for inclusion in the next diagnostic manual to be published in 2012.

I've asked this before no doubt, but has gaming caused you any trouble?

Once, I smashed a new PlayStation controller after failing to beat Tekken 2.

I think I've also claimed to be ill a few times when I was actually playing CSS. Small time stuff...

I smashed the 2 controllers I had with my Super Famicon/Super NES (not sure how it was called in the US) due to me losing too much on Street Fighter 2 and broke the caps key of my keyboard one day I punched it. Sometimes you need to do it to calm down.

I've read a book a few weeks ago about addiction, and the main reason why I had bought it was the undertitle : Sex, alcohol and (VIDEO)GAMES. Yes, games (like gambling) and videogames are an addiction too. Yet there was no real indication on how to quit... Too bad for us :(

I think the smashing stuff is just indicative of being a bit of a hothead. I had a roommate who would chuck his controller all over the apartment no matter what we were playing. He would do this with beer cans or tennis rackets or anything else as well.

I think the addiction is staying up "just one more hour" hour after hour until you think "crap, I don't have time to shower before work." Fortunately, I have a wife who prevents me from going down that path.

Raven if you could please post a link to the article on this I'd like to read more about it. Needless to say this is a topic of concern for many today who either play themselves or have children who play or will be playing video games. I think a clear distinction must be made between physical and psychological addiction. While they are different each has the ability to effect the other. The key word here though is "disorder" which can be both, and in some cases both at the same time. This reminds me of an article I read a while back about a Mom who upon inspecting her son's bedroom found a missing flower vase next to the boys desk. In the vase was urine. Turns out the young man was so occupied with playing WoW that he did not have the willpower to break for a moment to take a leak and found something he could keep close by to avoid having to leave the game. Other curious phenomenon are where some visual effects in gaming have caused players to suffer nausea and/or to end up passing out, each can be characterized as a disorder. I'm not qualified to say whether they are physical or psychological, but one thing is certain - they are disorders. Fortunately these types of occurrences are the exception not the rule. Also, not unlike other issues of importance for every study that claims there are no associated problems you can find a study that takes the opposite position. What is certain is that like anything else that affects our well being this should be monitored carefully. As both our desire and abilities to play improve, and the games become more realistic and possessive of our time and resources, the possibility of addiction and disorders should be a concern to us all. Excellent blog - much food for thought.

Atrus,

Sure. I read a few reports on it.

Here's one: - http://www.technewsworld.com/story/gaming/58014.html

The CBS article here makes really interesting reading: -

Hope this can start a very "modern" debate.

LoL - Alpha, you're doomed my friend. Word is Weaver and Labec have formed a PAC (Political Action Committee) that will lobby Congress to usher in legislation that would prevent the FDA from developing the much needed medication to treat Spawnpoint addiction. At this point there is no cure only treatment, but I've heard there is a widely used home remedy found only in British Columbia that helps to soothe both the physical and mental stress of the disorder. Only problem is the remedy has adverse affects on ones ability to finish remodeling projects ;)

Raven, all kidding aside I too hope there will be serious discussion on the issue. Thank you for the links - good reading.

Raven - see if you can fix the HTML on this. You should be able to copy and paste again and perhaps it fixes it. If not

Then I can try to help!

And nothing wrong with being addicted to spawnpoint :)
